Music Reviews of Alice Di Micele's "It's A Miracle"

Victory Music Review, Vol. 14 No. 9 September 1989

Percy Hilo

This is one of the most powerful and musical statements of the year. With a spirit rooted deep in the earth and a voice that would make any songs more appealing, Alice Di Micele sings to us of the beauty and destruction of nature and in the interconnectedness of all living things. "Orange Moon, Silver Fire," "Julie's Song", and "The Beaver Song" plead for an understanding of Mother Earth and our own precarious condition, while "Not For Sale" shows the integrity of Native American traditions. "The God In You" and the title cut speak of the beauty and potential in all of us which is at one with the beauty of nature as exhibited in "First Snow" and the stunning "The Prettiest Jewel." The feeling is true, the accompaniment correct for each mood and the production is first rate. A breath of fresh air.

Mary Heckler

Starting this folksy album with a song like "All Or Nothin'" gives instant insight into this singer/songwriter's soul. She is, as she says "standing naked in stormy weather," in all her songs. Her gentle yet gutsy voice and thoughtful lyrics stand strong in the face of mighty forces in the the world, expressing both spiritual and political awareness. This is earthy inspiring music, with a rustic, country twinge.

"All Or Nothin'" is a statement of her intention to keep love from being a game: "I've had enough of this half-assed stuff/ I want it all or I don't want nothin'". "Orange Moon, Silver Fire" asks us to save the Earth's forests, to see our place in the chain of being. "Not For Sale" is a moving song about the Black Hills and seems to ask when America will see, accept and honor it's Indian heritage. "Woke Up Cryin'" is a beautiful, powerful expression of a raped girl's anguish. The singing is sensitive, light, and plaintive. "I see his face around every bend/I want to get on with my life/but I just can't seem to sleep through the night..." Alice's guitar is a gentle support for the girl's feeling.

"It's A Miracle" is musically the most appealing song on this album. The accompaniment of saxophone, drums and guitar gives a perfect setting for Alice's strong voice. Her singing is always professional and prime: "And watching a child be born from a woman/Watching his body flow from hers; It's a miracle..." And so is this album. Because the words to all the songs are included, this is a good one to sing along with. The ideals expressed raise consciousness and heal hearts. Recommended.
